ART IS LIFE

All creative activity is a meditative process

of communication with one's inner self.

Art is an activity that connects us to a meditative communication with our inner selves, and there is a feeling of floating timelessness that always accompanies that act of creating. It is play, the essence of life.

I only "became an artist" — began drawing and painting — in my 60s. Before that, my artistic nature found its outlet in writing, cooking, drumming, ESL teaching and photography, among other pursuits. And I've apparently always had a style, which has emerged in my painting as well: It tends to be asymmetrical, imperfect, sometimes provocative, and even contradictory. Lively colors meet subdued fields. My hand is determined to throw out multiple elements, while my eye struggles to calm things down. Although I tend to be attracted to the quieter, more subtle and even sophisticated or elegant work of many artists, my style remains stubbornly raucous. I revel in the freedom of unlimited shapes, colors, collage elements and texturing tools.

Abstract art is a wild ride. When I look at a blank canvas or wood panel, I never know where I’m going — I just play with bright colors and odd shapes. And then comes the process of toning things down, making the field less busy and more harmonious. That is the journey.
